Jet Desorption
The SICRIT® Jet Desorber module enhances Direct MS by enabling real-time analysis of solids and liquids, without the need for complex sample preparation. It uses a hot air or nitrogen jet to desorb even semi-volatile compounds, which are then ionized by the SICRIT® Ion Source. This allows for fast, reliable, and flexible screening.

As a proof-of-principle, the roasting of marshmallows was monitored in real time. Key aroma compounds linked to caramelization and Maillard reactions were detected directly from the solid matrix. The platform captured a wide chemical range, including both polar and non-polar species across varying volatilities, all in a single MS run.
The combination of thermal desorption and soft ionization expands the scope of direct MS analysis, enabling the investigation of diverse sample types and states across a broad chemical space for rapid screening and dynamic process monitoring.


In this example the pharmaceutically active ingredient (Bupropion, C13H18ClNO, m/z ([M+H]+) = 240.1150) of a tablet was identified based on its exact mass and isotope pattern. The open geometry allows to screen samples with non-volatile constituents without risking contamination of the system. In addition, the adjustable angle of the Jet Desorber allows for samples of any size and geometry to be analyzed.
Mass spectrometric read out of thin layer chromatography (TLC) plates can be accomplished with the Jet Desorber due to its focused gas stream of less then 3 mm in diameter. The hot air desorption allows to measure (semi-)volatile analytes independently of their UV activity or stainability in a single measurement.
