Jet De­sorp­ti­on

The SICRIT® Jet De­sor­ber mo­du­le enhan­ces Di­rect MS by en­ab­ling real-time ana­ly­sis of so­lids and li­quids, wi­t­hout the need for com­plex sam­ple pre­pa­ra­ti­on. It uses a hot air or ni­tro­gen jet to de­sorb even semi-vo­la­ti­le com­pounds, which are then io­ni­zed by the SICRIT® Ion Source. This al­lows for fast, re­lia­ble, and fle­xi­ble scree­ning.

Ra­pid and straight­for­ward vo­la­ti­liza­ti­on of both so­lid and li­quid samples.

As a pro­of-of-prin­ci­ple, the roas­ting of marsh­mal­lows was mo­ni­to­red in real time. Key aro­ma com­pounds lin­ked to ca­ra­me­liza­ti­on and Mail­lard re­ac­tions were de­tec­ted di­rect­ly from the so­lid ma­trix. The plat­form cap­tu­red a wide che­mi­cal ran­ge, in­clu­ding both po­lar and non-po­lar spe­ci­es across va­ry­ing vo­la­ti­li­ties, all in a sin­gle MS run.

The com­bi­na­ti­on of ther­mal de­sorp­ti­on and soft io­niza­ti­on ex­pands the scope of di­rect MS ana­ly­sis, en­ab­ling the in­ves­ti­ga­ti­on of di­ver­se sam­ple ty­pes and sta­tes across a broad che­mi­cal space for ra­pid scree­ning and dy­na­mic pro­cess mo­ni­to­ring.

In this ex­am­p­le the phar­maceu­ti­cal­ly ac­ti­ve in­gre­di­ent (Bu­pro­pi­on, C13H18ClNO, m/z ([M+H]+) = 240.1150) of a ta­blet was iden­ti­fied ba­sed on its exact mass and iso­to­pe pat­tern. The open geo­me­try al­lows to screen samples with non-vo­la­ti­le con­sti­tu­ents wi­t­hout ris­king con­ta­mi­na­ti­on of the sys­tem. In ad­di­ti­on, the ad­jus­ta­ble ang­le of the Jet De­sor­ber al­lows for samples of any size and geo­me­try to be ana­ly­zed.

Mass spec­tro­me­tric read out of thin lay­er chro­ma­to­gra­phy (TLC) pla­tes can be ac­com­plished with the Jet De­sor­ber due to its fo­cu­sed gas stream of less then 3 mm in dia­me­ter. The hot air de­sorp­ti­on al­lows to me­a­su­re (semi-)volatile ana­lytes in­de­pendent­ly of their UV ac­ti­vi­ty or staina­bi­li­ty in a sin­gle me­a­su­re­ment.
