Smart Packaging of the Future: Scaling Safe Reuse in Europe

Plastic packaging plays a vital role in modern life. It protects products, ensures hygiene, and enables global supply chains. Yet at the same time, packaging, especially single-use plastic, has become one of Europe’s most pressing environmental challenges. Every year, millions of tons of plastic packaging waste are generated across Europe. While recycling has improved significantly, it alone cannot close the loop. Material losses, quality degradation, and complex waste streams limit how often plastic can be recycled effectively. To truly move towards a circular economy, reuse must become part of the solution.

From Recycling to Reuse: A Necessary Shift

Reusable packaging offers a powerful opportunity: extending the life of materials while reducing demand for virgin plastics, lowering emissions, and minimizing waste. However, scaling reuse is not without challenges.

Packaging intended for reuse must be durable enough to withstand multiple use cycles, safe for sensitive applications such as food, cosmetics, and household products, and efficient in terms of cleaning processes, logistics, and cost. At the same time, it must meet high consumer expectations without compromising convenience or trust. Addressing these requirements calls for collaboration across the entire value chain, from material development and process engineering to digital monitoring and innovative business models.

Buddie-Pack: Scaling Reusable Packaging in Europe

This is where Buddie-Pack comes in. Funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe program, the project brings together 19 partners across 6 European countries with a shared goal: to design, validate, and scale reusable plastic packaging systems for mass-market applications.

The project focuses on developing durable and safe reusable packaging while demonstrating its feasibility in real-life use cases within the food, cosmetics, and household product sectors. Simultaneously, Buddie-Pack works to quantify environmental benefits such as reductions in CO₂ emissions, energy consumption, and water use. An equally important part of the project is the development of scalable and economically viable business models that enable industry-wide adoption of reuse systems.

Through large-scale real-world demonstrations, Buddie-Pack aims to show that reuse can work not just in theory, but in everyday consumer applications.

Plasmion’s Role: Enabling Safe and Reliable Reuse

For reusable packaging to succeed at scale, safety and quality control are critical. Packaging that is reused must be reliably clean, free from harmful residues, and compliant with strict regulatory requirements.

This is where Plasmion contributes its expertise. Within Buddie-Pack, Plasmion provides real-time analytical technology based on its SICRIT® Ionization Technology. Our sensors enable real-time detection of impurities during washing and reuse cycles. Based on these analytical insights, cleaning parameters can be optimized to improve efficiency while reducing resource consumption. Additionally, they facilitate a data-driven quality control which helps safeguarding consumer health.

Looking Ahead

The transition to reusable packaging is a complex challenge, but also a major opportunity. Projects like Buddie-Pack demonstrate how cross-disciplinary collaboration and advanced sensor technology can turn sustainability goals into practical, scalable solutions.

Together, Buddie-Pack and Plasmion are working toward a future where packaging is cleaner, safer, and truly circular.
