The SICRIT® Breath Ana­ly­sis Mo­du­le of­fers a non-in­va­si­ve breath sam­pling ap­proach spe­ci­fi­cal­ly de­si­gned for chro­ma­to­gra­phy-free mass spec­tro­me­try ana­ly­sis. When com­bi­ned with the SICRIT® Io­niza­ti­on Source, this set­up en­ables me­ta­bo­lic mo­ni­to­ring of the vo­la­ti­le com­pounds pre­sent in exha­led breath. This ap­proach al­lows both real-time as­sess­ment of me­ta­bo­lic ac­ti­vi­ty and the iden­ti­fi­ca­ti­on of po­ten­ti­al bio­mar­kers.

As il­lus­tra­ted in the image, the mi­ni­mal frag­men­ta­ti­on and clean MS1 spec­tra pro­du­ced by our sys­tem fa­ci­li­ta­te the ge­ne­ra­ti­on of com­pre­hen­si­ve spec­tral pro­files for both tar­ge­ted and un­t­ar­ge­ted bio­mar­kers. This re­sults in more ef­fi­ci­ent pro­ces­sing and im­pro­ved cha­rac­te­riza­ti­on of com­plex samples such as hu­man breath.

The SICRIT® Breath Ana­ly­sis Mo­du­le, when cou­pled to the SICRIT® Io­niza­ti­on Source, en­ables the sen­si­ti­ve io­niza­ti­on of a broad ran­ge of po­lar and non-po­lar com­pounds pre­sent in exha­led breath. This ca­pa­bi­li­ty al­lows the ac­qui­si­ti­on of an in­di­vi­dua­li­zed me­ta­bo­lic pro­fi­le, ef­fec­tively ge­ne­ra­ting a per­so­na­li­zed me­ta­bo­lo­mic fin­ger­print.

In this stu­dy, dif­fe­ren­ces bet­ween the me­ta­bo­lo­mic pro­files of two in­di­vi­du­als are de­mons­tra­ted. In ad­di­ti­on, the same ex­pe­ri­men­tal work­flow is ap­pli­ed to a sin­gle in­di­vi­du­al to cha­rac­te­ri­ze tem­po­ral ch­an­ges in their me­ta­bo­lo­mic pro­fi­le.

Sin­ce the SICRIT® Io­niza­ti­on Source and con­se­quent­ly the SICRIT® Breath Ana­ly­sis Mo­du­le can be cou­pled to any mass spec­tro­me­ter, breath ana­ly­sis can be per­for­med on a wide ran­ge of in­stru­ment plat­forms, in­clu­ding both high re­so­lu­ti­on and low re­so­lu­ti­on sys­tems.

The ex­am­p­le pre­sen­ted here il­lus­tra­tes a tar­ge­ted ana­ly­sis ap­proach using the SICRIT® Breath Ana­ly­sis Mo­du­le. When ope­ra­ted on a high re­so­lu­ti­on mass spec­tro­me­ter, the sys­tem pro­vi­des clear and ea­si­ly in­ter­pr­e­ta­ble di­rect me­a­su­re­ment re­sults at the MS1 spec­tral le­vel.
