Enabling biomarker discovery & metabolism monitoring
The SICRIT® Breath Analysis Module offers a non-invasive breath sampling approach specifically designed for chromatography-free mass spectrometry analysis. When combined with the SICRIT® Ionization Source, this setup enables metabolic monitoring of the volatile compounds present in exhaled breath. This approach allows both real-time assessment of metabolic activity and the identification of potential biomarkers.
As illustrated in the image, the minimal fragmentation and clean MS1 spectra produced by our system facilitate the generation of comprehensive spectral profiles for both targeted and untargeted biomarkers. This results in more efficient processing and improved characterization of complex samples such as human breath.


The SICRIT® Breath Analysis Module, when coupled to the SICRIT® Ionization Source, enables the sensitive ionization of a broad range of polar and non-polar compounds present in exhaled breath. This capability allows the acquisition of an individualized metabolic profile, effectively generating a personalized metabolomic fingerprint.
In this study, differences between the metabolomic profiles of two individuals are demonstrated. In addition, the same experimental workflow is applied to a single individual to characterize temporal changes in their metabolomic profile.
Since the SICRIT® Ionization Source and consequently the SICRIT® Breath Analysis Module can be coupled to any mass spectrometer, breath analysis can be performed on a wide range of instrument platforms, including both high resolution and low resolution systems.
The example presented here illustrates a targeted analysis approach using the SICRIT® Breath Analysis Module. When operated on a high resolution mass spectrometer, the system provides clear and easily interpretable direct measurement results at the MS1 spectral level.
